"The lost letter was penned by Savio on Dec. 4, 1964, from Santa Rita Prison, where he and hundreds of students had been sent after being arrested for nonviolently sitting-in at Sproul Hall. The letter, which Savio had sent (or intended to send) to his parents, brother and grandmother, was discovered by Barbara Stack as part of a project -- funded by FSM veteran Thom Irwin of the Free Speech Movement Archive -- to gather and inventory the papers of FSM activists."

Each of these illustrious musicians, she informed me, had at one time or another been a member of OYO. ¶ Moreover, so had a number of other prominent Bay Area musicians, including violinists Dori Fukawa, Ellen Gronnigen, Carla Picchi, and Debbie Spangler; violist Betsy London; cellists Joseph Hebert and Elizabeth Strubble; bass player Patrick McCarthy; trombonist Don Benham; and percussionist Tyler Mack. ¶ Maybe it’s about time for local parents and community leaders to sit up and take notice of this potent training ground for young achievers."

"According to Barbara Stack, OYO’s executive director, 70 young orchestra members, ranging in age from 12 to 21 and representing multiple ethnic groups, assembled in Berkeley's Crowden (Music) School in late June to help pack up two dozen of the group's biggest instruments for truck transport to the airlines. ¶ "After some special ‘packing lessons,’ the kids worked to pack up four timpani, one bass drum, two full-size harps. a xylophone, four double basses, 11 cellos and a huge tuba in big boxes, some of which were rather makeshift. We barely made it when the trucks arrived!" ¶ Soon after, the young folks themselves boarded a plane for Italy in order to perform concerts in Montepulciano, Pistoia, Montecatini. Carpi and Crema, participate in educational sightseeing tours to several other Italian cities and build a repertoire of beautiful memories. At least 14 students were given full or partial scholarships for the tour. "
